Was discontinuing the production and development of the 2ZZ. This engine was fantastic, with its VTEC mimicking high-cam and free-revving nature. If they kept it around and kept improving it, they would be nowhere near as far in the hole as they are now. After all, they kept the pedestrian version around!

Sometimes I forget how good the last generation of Celica can look when lowered and put on some nice wheels.

I couldn't agree more! the 2zz was one of the greatest 4 cylinder engine I have ever had the privilege of driving! The Last Gen Celica GTS was an incredible machine! that engine and that transmission, beautiful! But that engine! My god! It loved to REV and just sang in those high rpm's! that noise over 6800rpm was... heavenly! and it just pulled! I wish I could try one out in the Lotus, esp with the supercharger. I may need new pants just thinking about it. I could only imagine where it would be these days.
My buddy who owned the GTS and I often pondered the pure sex that would be a 2zz derived v8. two of them fused at the cam. a sweet lovely rev happy 33.6LT v8. oh god. while we knew that would be a pipe dream, we had hoped for another evolution of the 2zz, but no they limped on in detuned common use.. woe is the fate of the 2zz

I heard it was a barrel of laughs in the Corolla as well, turned a boring car into a fun hoonmobile. Also the series 2 Lotus Elise makes great use of the 2ZZ in both n/a and s/c form!

The 2zz is so epic. Put one in an MR2 Spyder and you have yourself a budget Lotus.

I was sitting at a mcdonalds across teh road from a dealer when I first saw one, LOVE the look, and that wingless one above is astounding! shame they lose the RWD or AWD options

Even better, imagine a 270hp I6 derived from the 2ZZ jammed longitudinally into the FR-S...

And de-winged. It's one of the few sport compacts from the 2000s that actually looks better without.

I, proudly, drive a 2ZZ. And yes... it is just as ridiculous and wonderful as anyone can imagine.
